Where do 3D artists work in the production pipeline?
The modern production pipeline consists of three major segments: pre-production, production, and post-production. This pipeline is used for film, television, and game projects. In the pre-production phase, 2D artists create concept art, storyboards, and animatics to help bring the director’s vision to life. The production phase of the project is where most 3D work—modeling, animation, and VFX—is done. During post-production, sound, music, and color-correction are added to complete the project.
The majority of 3D artists work in the production phase of the pipeline. Modelers sculpt the characters, props, and environments, riggers get the characters ready for animation production, and layout artists position the cameras for filming. The animators bring the characters to life and the lighting, texture, and surface artists make everything look beautiful.
